Devil’s On The Downslide
Written by vanessa collier
Found myself down at Snake & Jake's bar
Listenin’ to records so worn they just cackle and hiss
I was starin’ at the swayin’ bulbs flickerin’
Like lightning bugs swirlin’ in a jar
But I don’t go
I don’t go
I don’t go where the light is
I sat down beside a man of the cloth
His collar spotted with grease, slightly askew
Smudged all the way round, dirty glass in hand
His crooked old spine pokin’ through
Somethin’ had a hold of him
That much I knew
Well we got to talkin’ all about his fall from grace
He said maybe there’s no saving me
All sinners start out tryin’ to be saints
But maybe it’s a waste of time
When the devil’s on the downslide
I had one more drink to genuflect
Before I left my barstool pew
He was long gone when the mission bells rang out
But like stained glass he’d colored the lens I’d been lookin’ through
It was clear right then, clear what I had to do
Hunt the shadows, conspire against the twilight
Fight to stand up for everyone
Fly with the angels and toe the line
Cause everybody knows the real problems underlie
That’s why I don’t go where the light is
When the devil’s on the downslide
I used to be afraid of that hellhound howl
But now who’s he tryin’ to scare?
Amber eyes, lanterns burnin’ in the pitch black
He’s just a figment of fear
(He’s) Taking refuge in the dark
But I can beat him there
That’s why I don’t go
I don’t go
I don’t go where the light is
